The LPV Collection – Las Vegas, 2008 by Julien Boast

Las Vegas, 2008

by Julien Boast

It may sound strange when speaking about photography, but in Jules work I can sense his patience.  He’s in no hurry to produce photographs because he’s looking for very specific photographs.  This deliberate process leads to a type of photography that’s often quiet, methodical and precise, exactly how he wants it I imagine.

Jules lives in London and much of his photography revolves around his walks around various neighborhoods.  But like most photographers, he shoots when he travels as well.  We’re excited to offer an exclusive photograph from his travels to one of the strangest cities in America, Las Vegas.

In this photograph are two of the iconic hotels of Las Vegas, the Luxor and Mandalay Bay.  Certainly a scene many tourists have viewed while on vacation.  In this view however, Jules creates a graphical layer by including in a row of metal boxes that I’m guessing hold newspapers and other free magazines.  They look alien and incongruent against the majestic presence of the hotels.  These are not the only repeating structures in the photo though. In the background, we have 8 to 9 vertical poles spread across the scene.

It’s scene constructed with an array of shapes which creates that perfect type of tension you find in good photographs.  Throw into the mix the Chris Angel ‘Believe’ banner on the Luxor and you have a photograph that captures the essence and strangeness of Las Vegas.

High and Low was a group edited by Julien Boast and Mike Dennington.  Here’s how they describe it:

“Not genre specific. Colour. Photos that are informed by a street photography aesthetic…”

High & Low was always deliberately vague – just a group of photos myself and/or Michael liked, which worked together.  Once we reached a point where we thought we might start repeating ourselves, we stopped it – and then asked photographers to put together edits from the group pool…

You can view edits by Mikhail Wassmer,Dariusz Konkiewicz,Luke Byrne, Rafael Alcacer, Chuck Patch, Marek Wykowski, Rita Luis, Missy Prince, Andrew Kelly, and Alex Cretey on High & Low. And if you’re one of the few people out there who don’t know his work, be sure to check out Mark Alor Powell.
